This will be (much like for Haken's latest album) a divisive release for longtime fans of the band. The presence of the cello has risen to become one of the focal points of the music, as hinted at on "Malina". More than ever, the vocals are in the driver's seat for much of the runtime. In a larger scope, the music is on the lighter (almost "electronic" sounding) side. Take some of the lighter elements from "Coal" and blend them with the scoping/synthy elements of "Malina" and you've got a decent idea of the sound of this release. Whether it's for better or for worse is a matter of tastes.Despite the shift away from heavier sounds into more subdued and ambient soundscapes, the sound feels like a natural path that the band is playfully exploring. This marks a shift in style that will be interesting to see the evolution of in (hopefully) future releases.
